What is acidity and why does it occur?

Acidity or acid reflux results in a burning sensation in the chest which is the most common symptom of acidity. When the bile or stomach acids flow back into the esophagus, it causes irritation.

Along with the burning sensation, acidity results in many other symptoms, for example, pain in the chest, stomach or throat, indigestion, bad breath, gas or flatulence, constipation, nausea or feeling of vomiting, frequent burps, regurgitation of undigested food coming back in the mouth, etc. 

Now that we know the symptoms, we can learn about the causes. Here are the most common causes:

Poor lifestyle habits

Bad habits and poor lifestyle choices like smoking, eating large meals, eating close to bedtime, and lying down immediately after meals are very common causes of acidity and heartburn. The key to prevention is making better choices and avoiding smoking or drinking.

Foods and drinks 

Certain food items and drinks can trigger acid reflux and result in heartburn. Some of these are onions, citrus fruits, tomato ketchup, fatty, and fried food items, chocolate, spicy foods, alcohol, tea or coffee, etc. Avoid eating such food items and try to eat a well-balanced healthy diet.


Being overweight results in added pressure on the abdomen which can cause acid in the stomach to travel up the esophagus and cause acidity and heartburn. If you are overweight, try to reduce your weight by exercising regularly and making dietary changes.


Certain groups of medications like drugs for asthma, antidepressants, and antihistamines are risk factors for acid reflux. Consult your doctor and inform them about what medications are you taking and have been on in the past. Your doctor may advise you to stop the medication or suggest alternatives.

Hiatus Hernia

Hiatal hernia itself has no symptoms but in this condition, LES or lower esophageal sphincter fails to function because of the hernia and hence results in acidity and heartburn.
